Anti-tarnish is a durability claim, not a permanence claim. Marketing has flattened it into "never tarnishes," and that overpromise is why so many people conclude that all fashion jewellery is rubbish, when what actually happened is that they were sold an unrealistic timeline.

Realistic numbers: a well made, properly coated, thickly plated piece worn most days will hold its finish for somewhere between eighteen months and three years. Worn in a swimming pool twice a week, less than a year. Kept in a sealed pouch and worn occasionally, considerably longer.

And skin chemistry matters more than any brand will tell you in writing. Some people's sweat is more acidic, and they'll wear through plating in half the time of someone with drier skin wearing the identical piece. If jewellery has always seemed to go dull faster on you than on your friends, you weren't imagining it.

7. Rotate. Wearing one piece every single day concentrates all the friction in one place. Owning three bracelets and alternating them will outlast owning one and wearing it constantly, which is a slightly annoying argument for buying more jewellery, but it happens to be true.

How to tell before you buy

Ask two questions the product page usually doesn't answer.

What's the base metal? If a listing says only "gold plated" or "gold tone" with no base specified, that absence is information. Brands using stainless steel or sterling say so, because it's expensive and they want credit for it.

What's the plating thickness in microns? Almost nobody publishes this in the Indian market. The brands that do are generally the ones with nothing to hide. If a brand answers this over email or WhatsApp, that's a good sign in itself.

Beyond that, look for a warranty with a stated duration, an explicit hypoallergenic or nickel free claim, and returns policy language that mentions the finish rather than avoiding it.
